Bedwetting and the child’s environment

When a child is continuously exposed to disturbing and sometimes threatening environmental situations, such as verbal violence between parents, it is likely that he will respond with bedwetting. In these cases, the child will feel threatened, as if he is the victim of the verbal violence himself.

When children receive conflicting messages from their parents, it causes them confusion and insecurity, and may manifest in bedwetting as well.

The stability of the family structure has an effect on bedwetting. In families who experience a shaky marriage or problematic relationships, children have a higher chance of bedwetting compared to families with a stable marriage or relationships.

Bedwetting in children living in problematic homes often stops when they are transferred to another non-threatening environment, such as a foster family or boarding school. This means that in many cases, environmental change may cause bedwetting to stop.
